One of the most interesting things about Climate Week NYC is the opportunity to meet and take action with incredible leaders and innovators in a wide range of fields driving climate action.

Our favorite events and activities include a roundtable discussion about the future of forest carbon standards, several great talks by Indigenous leaders on the frontlines of climate action, a movie screening and roundtable discussion at Angelika Film Center, an epic festival on The Great Lawn in New York’s beloved Central Park, and more: 

The Opening Ceremony – Part Three: It’s Time 

Where: 777 United Nations  Plaza, New York City. 

When: Sunday, September 22, 2024, 5pm – 6pm. 

About: the climate emergency is a race we are losing, but it is a race we can win. How can we summon the collective will of the climate community to ensure we all win the race in a just and equitable manner? And, what will it take to do so? 

Featured speakers include: Sonia Guajajara, Minister of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil; and Stephanie Abrams, Meteorologist.

“We Are Guardians” film screening 

Where: Angelika Film Center 

When: Monday, September 23, 2024, 5 pm 

About: Equitable Earth and Global Citizen are hosting an exclusive screening of the award-winning documentary, We Are Guardians. This powerful film follows Indigenous activists in Brazil as they risk their lives to protect their ancestral forests. Post-screening fireside chat: engage in a conversation with Beto Borges, Director of the Communities and Territorial Governance Initiative at Forest Trends Association; Puyr Tembé, First Secretary of Indigenous Peoples of the State of Pará; and the film’s directors, Edivan Guajajara and Chelsea Greene. Women on the Frontlines of the Climate Crisis: Ending the Era of Fossil Fuels and Implementing Solutions

Featured speakers include: Eriel Tchekwie Deranger, (Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation) Executive Director, Indigenous Climate Action. Puyr Tembé, the first Secretary of Indigenous Peoples of the State of Pará, Brazil.

Peace With Nature in Colombia: the road to the Biodiversity COP 16 

Where: The Explorers Club, New York City. 

When: Wednesday, September 25, 2024, 7 pm. 

About: Colombia is playing a key role in the upcoming UN COP16 Biodiversity summit, centered on the theme of restoring peace with nature, and turning what we think of a commodity into a community, guided by science and Indigenous knowledge. 

Featured speaker: Ambassador Leonor Zalabata Torres (Arhuaco), Colombia’s first indigenous woman appointed as her country’s ambassador to the United Nations.

Global Citizen Festival 

Where: Great Lawn, Central Park, New York City 

When: Saturday, Sept 28, 2024. 

About: Equitable Earth Coalition member Global Citizen presents a music celebration calling on world and corporate leaders to take urgent action to defeat poverty, defend the planet and demand equity. Jean-Robert Bwangoy of Wildlife Works – and the grandson of a local chief from Mai Ndombe region in the Congo Basin rainforest – will set the stage for concert goers with a message to save our planet’s tropical forests by partnering with local forest communities. The festival also features a special appearance by the legendary and beloved Dr. Jane Goodall.
